“Wanderlust” is a word often used to describe artist Kristine Scharf Kainer. Born in North Carolina, Kristine led the lifestyle of a typical military dependent. Her father, an officer in the United States Marine Corps, was transferred frequently throughout the East Coast. As a result, Kristine was exposed to the inherent beauty of each locale in which she lived. The family eventually settled in the Washington, D.C. area where Kristine immersed herself in its natural and cultural diversity. These formative years would later ignite an artistic spark…

In 1986, Kristine graduated from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Though she dabbled in art for relaxation, she never considered using her talents professionally. Instead, she earned her M.Ed. from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and pursued a successful career as a mathematics teacher.

After marriage, Kristine’s wanderlust returned. Entranced by the natural beauty of Central Texas, she and her husband purchased the Kainer family homestead in rural Schulenburg to enjoy a slower pace of life while raising their young daughter. Employment opportunities allowed the family to gain a second home in Georgetown, an outer suburb of Austin. Thus, the family experiences a dual lifestyle: the quietude of their farm and the excitement of the city.

Now a full-time artist, Kristine specializes in oils. Growing, then painting food is a passion. Rustic art and seascapes are also cherished inspirations. Commissions are always welcome. As for her wanderlust, it appears to be finally sated—or is it?

For years many have passed this house and marveled at the floral display at 3725 No. Vassault St. in Tacoma . Last year there was no display and we had wondered if the Asian man who owns this house was ill. This year the display was back in force and we stopped this past Sunday to photograph it. We went up to the owner and told him how much we had enjoyed his garden all these years and he invited us to tour his creation. We found the backyard to be as beautiful as the front. He is Vietnamese, shy, very soft spoken, and speaks very little English, so we couldn't discuss too much with him about the garden.

As you can see a lot of the flowers are in pots.

I guess this is so they can be changed easily.

The front of the house is not neglected,either.

I wonder if he takes the pots in at night to keep them

from being stolen.

Here is the master gardener! I wish we could have communicated.

I will print up some of these photos and give them to him.

Look at how precise the hanging pots are lined up.

A hand shows the size. It is hard to believe this is one man's work

and I believe he must work on it every day, all day long.

My Modeling Career ... Ha!

I haven't posted in awhile, but I have been painting, and I'll get caught up on the posting soon. (Blogger was really squirrely for a few days last week, so I gave up wasting time on that.)

But in the interim I was called on for Monday and Tuesday of this week to model for a painter's workshop. Qiang Huang (pronounced Chong Wong) put together a workshop with his friend Zhaoming Wu as the instructor. Modelling was a new experience for me since I'd never done that before. But I do have an amusing story to share with all of you.
On the first day I met Qiang for the first time and he then introduced me to Mr Wu and of course we shook hands. But as he released his grip I held on to his hand and asked "Is this the hand you paint with?"
"Yes" he replied.
I then clasped his hand with both of mine and said "Let me see if I can get some of your magic."
We both had a chuckle over that and then as I released his hand Qiang said to him "Kirk is an artist too."
Then Mr Wu said "Well in that case...." as he extended his hand for me to shake again. And we had another hearty handshake and a laugh over that.
I didn't have the heart to tell him I'm left handed.

Bio: A native of Wichita Kansas, oil painter Mary Hughes became serious about pursuing art under the tutelage of watercolor artist Charles Sanderson. Though not formally trained beyond her brush with Sanderson, the past few decades she has gathered inspiration and hours of self-study in Chicago, Michigan and the coast of Maine. Her face paintings of companion birds was highlighted in Good Bird Magazine. Her work falls into several categories: birds, dog portraits, realistic still life and most recently lake and ocean scenes claim her attention. Her paintings can be found in private collections in the U.S., Japan, The Netherlands, France, England and Israel.

So much fun doing the research for this painting. When Dominic and I were in the

restoration business we restored several of Eames furniture pieces, especially

these well known Eames black molded plastic chairs. I always wondered what the big attraction

was until I sat in one and melted. They are so comfortable and were so far ahead of their time being Post war Modernism.

I felt the Mark Rothko paintings were a perfect match to use in a composition with Eames as they were from the same Era 1903 - the 70's and the two arts complimented each other so well. The table is also Eames and the Carpt was designed after Rothko.

Well, while I was at it, I dug into the past ( ok giving my age away here) to see what else I could come up with when I hit pay dirt with the Juke Box. I am sure may of you remember those. How fun! Add a couple of Ice Cream Sodas, a penny Bubble Gum Machine, a copy of Look and Bazaar Magazines, a big chrome lamp and couple pairs of those wild and crazy Saddle Shoes and you have " A Blast From The Past" Enjoy

Mark Rothko, born Marcus Rothkowitz (September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was a Russian-born American painter. He is classified as an abstract Impressionist, although he himself rejected this label, and even resisted classification as an "abstract painter".

Painting consumed Rothko's life, and although he did not receive the attention he felt his work deserved in his own lifetime, his fame has increased dramatically in the years following his death. At odds with the more formally rigorous artists among the Abstract Expressionists, Rothko nevertheless explored the compositional potential of color and form on the human psyche. To stand in front of a Rothko is to be in the presence of the pulsing vibrancy of his enormous canvases; it is to feel, if only momentarily, something of the sublime spirituality he relentlessly sought to evoke. Rigidly uncompromising, Rothko refused to bend to the more distasteful aspects of the art world, a position upheld by his children who did nothing less than alter the entire state of the art market in their fierce protection of his life and work.

The United States Army commissioned Charles to produce plywood stretchers and splints during the war. He was the first person to produce compound curves with molded plywood and fiberglass. This led to his design of the LCM chair in 1945, it had a molded plywood seat and back with compound curves on metal legs. In 1956, Charles and his wife Ray designed the famous Lounge chair 670 and Ottoman 671 to replace the overstuffed wingchair. It was made of laminated Rosewood with leather padding, and the same bend was used for all the pieces. Eames 670 chair and Van Der Rohe's Barcelona chair are considered the two greatest furniture designs of the 20th Century. Eames the first architect and designer to be completely at home with technology, he mastered the machine so that it was no longer threatening.

The first jukeboxes were simply wooden boxes with coin slots and a few buttons. Over time they became more and more decorated, using color lights, rotating lights, chrome, bubble tubes, ceiling lamps, and other visual effects. Many consider the 1940s to be the "golden age" of jukebox styling with the gothic-like curvaceous "electric rainbow cathedral" look. World War II and the Great Depression were over, so the new designs and sales choices reflected the festive mood. The first model manufactured after WWII was the Model A, produced by AMI. Affectionately referred to as the "Mother of Plastic", it featured large areas of opalescent plastics and colored gemstones.

SLIDELUCK POTSHOW is New York City based non profit started by photographer Casey Kelbaugh that brings together people in the community around food and art. It is basically a large community based potluck followed by a slide show.

Last years event was held across the street at the historic Tobacco Warehouse under the stars in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a truly spectacular evening. Today it was almost impossible to get a good painting,

I had a good starting point though, behind two blue doors

one of them was open and I noticed a lovely wall, so I fetched

my view-catcher to see if it would look like a nice subject.

A lady came outside to ask what I was doing and she told

that there was a lovely tower at the other end of the building

I had a look but decided to stick with the wall, but viewed

from the other side. During the session it rained several times

it hailed two times, and although I closed my pochade to shelter

the painting I couldn't stop the Sun so the whole scene changed

too much in the end, ...

Marko Susla, currently residing in New Jersey, was born and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut. For his eighth grade graduation trip into Manhattan, his father placed a Leica 35mm in his hands, gave him a roll of black and white film and a few instructions on using the camera. From here Susla's interest in photography grew. Marko Susla was classically trained as a scientist obtaining a B.S. from the University of Bridgeport followed by six years of post graduate studies at Wesleyan University (Connecticut). Working with spatial concepts, the rules of assembly, learning how to look at things, to see things, to document abstract concepts, and effectively present them in a visual representation, science was a natural conduit into photography. A camera was a natural extension of using scientific instrumentation. The camera, though, has an additional dimension--the ability to capture and portray emotion and feelings.

Marko pursued independent study in photography and is currently under the mentorship of a fine art professional. His current interests are disparate, ranging from the beauty of scenic and landscape photography, the dark side of documenting abandoned structures and places, and, most recently, the beauty and drama of nocturnal photography. Perhaps what seems disparate is actually a balance.

Marko Susla's work has been shown in a number of exhibitions around the United States, including: Vermont Photography Workplace in Middlebury, Vermont; The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado; Presidio of San Francisco and New Orleans. His work was also part of an online gallery project based in Kópavogur, Iceland. Susla has also had work published in Burn Magazine and SuperMassiveBlackHole

Night Work

Wandering into the night, all your senses come alive. The drama and ballet exploding in the sharp contrasts of the city lights to the mysterious shadows cast by the abandoned barns and tomb stones deep in the woods. Fantasies emerge ranging from a romantic moonlit beach to the nitrous oxide fueled rage of David Lynch into the night. For the nocturnal photographer, this is our pallet. An extended pallet that allows the nocturnal photographer a greater ability to manipulate and interpret the mood in order to covey a state of mind. A simple change in lighting, the use of ambient light, creative flash, or focused light painting, varying angles, can dramatically alter the mood of subject. It takes more than just the eyes to see. It takes more than just a camera to tell a story.

These days, before the long days of summer arrive, Marko prefers the solitude of the night, Nocturnal Photography. Mainly photographing alone, he keeps a low profile wanting to blend in and not be seen. There are quick rides on the NYC Subway to get into the DUMBO section of Brooklyn. There are long walks in the woods to get to the long forgotten structures in ruin. This is Marko’s real element. To be serenaded by a pack of nearby coyotes is sweet music giving comfort in knowing he is not detected and no other human is present in the vicinity, otherwise they would not howl so close by. Sweet music and sanctity of the night. Don’t bother looking for him. You will never see him as he carries out his ritual of capturing the night.

It has been with great sadness that we have watched from afar the tragedy that has occurred in Japan during the past week. My heart goes out to the people who are struggling to make sense of the lives that they are now living. Many have lost everything; homes, livelihoods, communities, and families. I am hoping to sell several of the works I've created in the past few years and send the proceeds of those sales to a relief agency that is helping to provide the most essential needs of daily life to those affected and also provide some hope for their souls.

This is one great exhibit! The show features work by pairs of artists who are related in some way. I am partnering with Leslie Heck, owner of Saratoga Dance, in Saratoga Springs. Leslie is a dear friend and one of Tom's Girls....students of my late teacher, Tom Vincent. This is one of the paintings I created under his guidance and very special to me. He loved us all so much...and we loved him back...one of those irreplaceable spirits who walked and shared his wisdom, love, wit and guidance so generously.

If you are in the area, stop in for a visual treat. Opening reception is this Saturday, March 5 from 5-8 and part of the First Saturday Open Studios on Beekman Street. This will most likely be my last posting on DPIAG. After many months of posting on several of these Blogs, I have come to the conclusion, regrettably, that they are just not the best forum for my work. I am not a daily painter, rarely paint en plein air, and do not create small works, sketches, or studies. When I do, I give them away or trade them for services. I paint every week, but because of juggling paid work, child care, domestic responsibilities, and the amount of labor required to complete a painting, currently only produce 4 – 6 large paintings per year. In the four years or so that I began the “Working Land” series I have yet to sell a single work and have been unable to attract the attention of a gallery or an agent to represent me. Understandably, the current economic status of this country (and the world) plays no small part in who is purchasing higher priced, or any art at all for that matter these days. Needless to say, purchasing original art is not a priority for many people, even those who are comfortably secure. That combined with the fact that I am a relatively “unknown” artist at a time when there is little or no risk-taking on the part of galleries and agents in favor of the security of the known.

At the risk of sounding (somewhat) cynical, I might add perhaps that might also explain why one sees so much of the same old same old and their derivatives that dominate nearly all of the print art media. Maybe not. Yet I remain undaunted and will continue to seek the holy grail of representation. To that end I need to carefully allocate what little funds are available to marketing and promotion efforts that just might bring about that change. But that’s just my opinion. Madison has created a robust and high-quality environment for the display and recognition of works of art and she is passionate about what she does and does it very well. Meanwhile I will continue to post on my own blog — baldassinifineart@blogspot.com — so please check in often and let me know you’re still out there.

“Study in Red and Gray.”
So then, after 2 months of relentless snowfall, ice and rain, and a very busy January of commercial paying graphic design and photo restoration work, I have finally managed to get in some quality painting time again. Posted here after a final 16 hours of work is the completed painting entitled “Study in Red and Gray.” Everything pretty much progressed as noted in previous postings, saving my favorite part for last — the foreground field.

As usual, I started by “oiling up” the field with my usual green, a medium-dark mixture of Williamsburg Indigo and Sennelier Chinese Orange mixed with a generous amount of jelly medium Old Master’s Maroger Flemish Medium). Some more hot coffee at the ready, a tacky surface ready to accept brushwork I create a couple of piles of green mixtures using the base green neutralized with Sennelier Warm Grey, which I add into just about every color mixture. From there it’s just making lots of different greens and carefully matching the values in the underpainting. I modulate the temperature of base green with Viridian, Cad. Yellow Medium and/or Raw Sienna as necessary adding brushstokes of cool and warm colors for variety paying special attention to lively shadows. I use a couple of brushes, wiped clean with a rag as necessary and as the different colored green piles begin multiplying all over the palette surface I grab from here and there without really thinking about it.

I have mentioned before in my posts how once I get into the painting zone — always with the help of background music played very loudly — I put down marks without intellectualizing in any way what I am doing. And I do this in 3 - 4 hour bursts and then rest. If I stop and think about what I’m doing even for a few seconds then all is lost. I put down the paint and that’s that. I pay VERY close attention to the VALUES of my mixes. Incorrect colors are somewhat forgiving; incorrect values are not. Correct values are of paramount importance, after design and drawing. I would rather have something be wrong with an unconscious honesty about it then go back and fiddle and diddle it to death. It just never works for me. The next day I will examine what I did with fresh eye and RARELY, if necessary, and with great restraint retouch a previously painted passage. I may glaze and/or scumble this or that mainly knocking back something appearing too loud or arresting.

Up to this point all color mixtures have been grayed down with Sennelier Warm Grey (most everything in natural light is grayed down anyway). A trick I learned from watercolor painting was that high-chroma colors sparkle like jewels in a sea of neutralized color and it only takes a few of them here and there to liven things up convincingly. So, when all is dry I come back with the finishing touches of pure high-chroma color practically straight out of the tube, and bright white catchlights. Judicious use of these final touches is great fun, breathing life into the painting and serving to keep the eye continuously moving through the composition.

To get into painting zone for the final session I listened to a lot of Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band material, mainly the superbly crafted “Lick My Decals Off Baby,” “The Spotlight Kid” and “Clear Spot” from 70 – 72. I am a hard-core Don Van Vliet fan and was greatly saddened by this master artist’s passing on December 17. I was lucky enough to catch every performance of The Magic Band in the 70’s up until his last Boston performance in the early 80’s. The sine qua non of Van Vliet’s singular genius was abundantly evident in not only in his music, but in his painting and drawing. Those performances still linger and resonate with me to this day.

we switched DVD and Art books quiet regularly and we

always said we gonna meet up one day, ... today it was the day!

"De Horsterhof" a micro dynamic biological farm. I knew

it but I triggered me to have a look again, and together with

the marvelous weather (Sun is in full swing) it was a gorgeous

spot to be, ... looked around after while and discovered soo

much more spots so all in one,

Tuesday, March 8, 2011, is the Centenary of International Women’s Day. At AyrSpace in Ontario, Canada, this year, 100 women from all over the world will raise their artistic voices and exhibit works responding to the theme International Women Celebrate! (IWC!) for five weeks—from Tuesday, March 8, to Sunday, April 10.

I am honored to be one of the 100. My painting, “In Step,” will exhibit with work by women artists from Canada, India, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, among other nations.

AyrSpace’s IWC! exhibit was conceived to: 1) observe the Centenary of International Women’s Day, 2) bring together an international artistic response to International Women Celebrate! and 3) contribute to the Haitian relief effort by donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of artworks to help improve healthcare conditions for Haitian women and their children.

“In Step” is an intuitive, expressionist painting symbolizing women in all walks of and places in life who are moving, happily, toward their self-made destinies. It is with intent that I did not assign face, race or creed to the figures. No matter the differences in our physical appearance, geographical location or personal beliefs, we have one very important thing in common – we are life givers – creators – and that is something to celebrate!

I am honored to have been invited to participate in the MOYA 2011 exhibition in Vienna, Austria!

The MOYA is located in the Palais Schönborn in the center of Vienna. I will have over 30 pieces in their online exhibition.

The Palais dates back to the late 17th century and was built by the famous austrian architect Fischer v. Erlach, who also built the Vienna Karlskirche.

The MOYA shows artworks on two floors on ca. 1000m². Some of the 12 exhibition halls are Salons still in the original Rococo state, others are kept in simple neutral white without decorative elements.

There were at least 300 persons who attended the opening of Gallelry 262 on Jan. 21st. There was good food and good music and we all enjoyed ourselves. I have more than 30 paintings in the gallery. Statement: I am an abstract artist living in Murrieta, California.
My favorite subjects are abstract landscapes, cityscapes and horses.
I enjoy working with watercolor, acrylic, soft pastels, oil pastels,
charcoal and ink on paper. Vivid color and contrast are elements
that are important to me as well as line and texture. I also enjoy
the simplicity of charcoal. I prefer working on paper because I
like to use the drawing and water medias.

Bio: I graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in
Journalism/Advertising and had a career as an advertising newspaper
representative for over 20 years. I also studied art during and
after college including classes in life drawing, design, drawing,
oil painting, watercolor, printmaking and weaving. I have exhibited
in group shows at: the Salon de Refuse, Eugene, Oregon; Riverside
Community Art, Riverside, California; Redlands Art Association,
Redlands, California and the Aaron Gallery in Washington D.C. I
currently have gallery representation with the Aaron Gallery,
Washington D.C.
